CF related April Fools jokes

As it is the season, and being inspired by Ran Camden's Getting even with Bob. I thought I would share an April Fools like joke that I pulled on a co-worker and leveraged Cold Fusion in the prank.

A little back story on this, a co-worker sent me an email with the from address looking like it came from the boss. The email in short said I was fired. What the co-worker did not know, it I had just made a major screwup that morning. So, an email saying I was fired, was not exactly out of the question. So for about 10 mins, before he told me it was a joke, I was getting ready to pack up my desk.

So to get back at him, I thought, I gotta do something long term. I devised to build a screen scraper in CF and use it as a proxy for the CNN news site that this co worker checked almost hourly. So, I tweaked the co workers hosts (that will teach him to prank the network admin) file to direct all requests for CNN.com our local CF server, then the local CF server via CFHTTP went out and got the requested page from CNN and relayed it back to my unsuspecting co-worker. In the process I would have CF do a simple find and replace on some words. I was planning on slowly changing the find and replaces to become more and more absurd.

I finally had to give it up as he was complaining (to the boss) that some sites were very slow, namely CNN.  Ok, Time to fess up, but before I did, I thought I would get him BIG TIME. So, at this time a $20 million reward was issued on Osama bin Laden. Well, from his computer, a $20 million reward was issued for HIM by name on CNN's home page. Lets just say that after the shock wore off, we all had a good laugh.

So if you have a good CF prank / April Fools joke that you pulled, lets hear it.

Joanne's Gravatar We pulled a good one on the boss quite a few years ago. He was always talking about tardiness of the folks in our lab, but he was one of the worst offenders. Always strolling in 10-15 minutes after 8. So, we decided to get back at him and draw attention to his arrival time. I was hardware, but my buddy was software, so he wrote a program (this was around 1985, easier times) to shut down the computer if the boot time was after 8 am. Installed the program after hours one night and waited for the morning. Boss came in late. Booted computer and it crashed. Crashed HARD. Took most of the day and the biggest software dude in the company to fix the problem. Needless to say, we didn't fess up until I moved out of state a few years later! By then, it was a good laugh.
